Festivals of Tenerife: Traditions, Vibrant Events and the Island’s Atmosphere
Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary archipelago, attracting tourists not only with its mild climate and scenic landscapes but also with a rich cultural life. Throughout the year, festivals, fairs and celebrations take place here that reflect the island’s history, religious traditions and the joyful spirit of the local people.
Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The most famous event on the island is the Carnival in Santa Cruz, held every February in the capital. It is considered the second largest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro’s in Brazil. Tens of thousands of people in bright costumes take to the streets, parades march through the city, dance school competitions are held, and a Carnival Queen is chosen. At night the city turns into one big open-air disco. For tourists, it’s a unique opportunity to experience the festive atmosphere and see the Canary Islands in their most jubilant form.
Religious Celebrations
Catholic traditions are very strong in Tenerife. One of the most significant events is the Corpus Christi celebration in La Orotava. On this day, locals create intricate carpets made of colored volcanic sand and flower petals directly on the streets — gigantic works of art that are impressive in both scale and detail.
Equally important is the procession in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the Canary Islands. Every August 15th, pilgrims from all over the archipelago come to the town of Candelaria to pay tribute to this sacred figure.
Traditional Fiestas
Every town and even small village in Tenerife has its own festival — a fiesta patronal dedicated to the local patron saint. During these days there are street concerts, fairs and performances by folk groups. The celebrations in honor of Saint John (the night of June 23–24), when bonfires are lit on the beaches and lively parties take place, are especially popular.
Another interesting tradition is the Romería — a religious pilgrimage combined with a rural fair. Participants wear traditional costumes, decorate ox-drawn wagons, and welcome visitors with local wine and Canarian cuisine. The largest Romería takes place in La Laguna in July.
Modern Festivals
In addition to religious and folk celebrations, Tenerife also offers a range of modern entertainment formats. The island hosts events such as the Heineken Jazz Festival, the Saborea Tenerife Gastronomy Festival, film festivals and fashion fairs. All of this makes the cultural life of Tenerife rich and diverse.
Festival Atmosphere
A special feature of Canarian celebrations is that they bring together tourists and locals. During these events everyone feels part of a large communal experience: whether it’s a carnival, a procession or a street concert. Music, dancing, laughter and friendliness create a unique atmosphere that visitors remember for a long time.
